Engineering Series : Chemical Engineering

In this series of Engineering Professions, today I would like to highlight profession of a Chemical Engineer.

Chemical engineering is a discipline of engineering that merges the knowledge of physical sciences and life sciences with mathematics and economics to produce, transport and properly utilize chemicals, materials and energy by converting raw materials into something that is of use and value.

Alright, so that brings us to the basic question, “What do Chemical Engineers do?” Perhaps the question you should be asking is, what don’t they do? They are involved in the manufacture of items of daily use such as deodorants, glues, paints and plastic just to name a few. They constantly seek to find ways of improving food processing techniques, and methods of producing fertilizers. They produce synthetic fibers, find more efficient means of refining petroleum products and help in the production of renewable energy.

If you enjoyed studying chemistry and balancing chemical equations then chemical engineering might be of great interest to you. It involves having a deep insight and knowledge of naturally occurring chemicals and their reactions and characteristics. But a chemical engineer doesn’t stop at that.

Chemical engineering is basically concerned with the detailed study of production, transformation and proper use of chemicals, materials and energy. So they will also learn a lot about  mass producing chemicals, fluid flow (transporting chemicals) – which involve a lot of maths and calculation. Plant design, one of the subjects,  would involve a lot of maths too

Chemical Engineers have a bright future ahead of them owing to their huge demand in giant industrial processing plants, petroleum refining, production and storage of renewable energy and in the industries involved in the manufacture of everyday products.

In Malaysia, Chemical engineers are needed in many industries :
Palm Oil industry – United Plantations, Sime Darby, Unico

Household products manufacturing – toothpaste, soap, detergent, Food, oil, flour, basically most of the stuff you get in the supermarket food, and household area – which is a whole lot of stuff. – Unilever, Proctor and Gamble, Nestle, Henkel

Pharmaceutical Companies: Chemical Engineers are heavily utilized in Pharmaceutical companies – GlaxoSmithkline, Merck, B Braun, Pharmaniaga, Ranbaxy, CCM, Hovid, The Himalaya Drug Company 

Oil and Gas Industry – Mechanical Engineers are needed in all areas of this industry. Almost every component dealing with oil and gas extraction has a mechanical element to it. (Except at this moment of writing (Jan 2016) – the Oil and Gas industry is pretty much in a low, and firing is happening more than hiring. The salaries in this area is the highest, though.)

Chemical Producers – Fertilizers, Chemicals – example – BASF, CCM,  Titan Chemical Group

In this series of Engineering Professions, today I would like to highlight profession of a Mechanical Engineer. (While the video above highlights more of the role of mechanical Engineers in the transportation industry, other major areas Mechanical Engineers are involved would be the Oil and Gas, Chemical, and Construction industries)

Mechanical Engineering is the most popular undergraduate degree in engineering; according to the American Society for Engineering Education. If you have a knack for cars, toys, robots, machineries and have often found yourself wondering about their mechanism and working principles, then you should seriously look into adopting Mechanical engineering as your profession.

Mechanical engineering deals with manufacture, design and analysis of mechanical systems through knowledge of physics, materials science and maths. Mechanical engineering involves having to design and analyze mechanical systems that are employed in virtually every system that we see around us. Their areas of expertise include designing products, discovering new and innovative solutions to human problems through research and development, overseeing the operations of large systems, supervision, generation, storage and transfer of energy

Mechanical engineers design and analyze their systems from every aspect through extensive use of CAD (Computer Aided Design) and take into account the potential outcomes that might hinder the proper working of systems and machines. (CAD is an area which our CAD Design Centre specializes in)

There are many disciplines of mechanical engineering at the disposal of mechanical engineers to select and specialize in. These sub disciplines include Mechanics, Mechatronics and robotics, Thermodynamics, design and drafting. You can opt to specialize in any one of these sub disciplines or form a combination of these sub disciplines that resonates well with your interests.

In Malaysia, Mechanical engineers are needed in many industries including Automotive (Proton, Toyota, Perodua, Honda, Nissan – has large factories in Malaysia) , aerospace, Biotechnology and Nanotechnology . In fact in almost all factories, including Chemical  and Electronic Factories- the Mechanical Engineer is a needed profession.

Oil and Gas Industry – Mechanical Engineers are needed in all areas of this industry. Almost every component dealing with oil and gas extraction has a mechanical element to it. (Except at this moment of writing (Jan 2016) – the Oil and Gas industry is pretty much in a low, and firing is happening more than hiring. The salaries in this area is the highest, though.)

In the Construction industry – Mechanical Engineers are needed in the Mechanical and Electrical division (aka M&E) division. Here mechanical Engineers will take up the role of designing and implementing aircond layout and calculation for buildings, plumbing, Heat transfer, Fire fighting systems (example -water sprinklers layout) and anything that does not deal with the structure of the building. (At most times, you wouldn’t see these in buildings, as they are always hidden, to keep the outward look of the building)

computer science vs computer engineering

Engineering Series : Computer Engineering vs Computer Science

In this series of Engineering Professions, today I would like to highlight profession of a Computer Engineer. A lot of people get confused between Computer Science and Computer Engineering. Computer Science deals with more the ‘soft’ aspect or rather the software side, which covers areas like Programming, Operating Systems, and networking. It covers programming languages like Java and C++.

Computer Engineering focusses more on the hardware side of things, like microprocessors. How hardware communicates with the software, etc.

Another good video is below, as it covers a more detail difference between Computer Science and Computer Engineering.

In Malaysia, Computer Engineers are needed in the areas of  Aerospace, Electronic Factories, Product Design and Equipment design (R&D divisions in companies). Thye could be also involved in software related companies (a lot of them centred in Cyberjaya), because of their background in software too.

Engineering Series : Mechatronic Engineering

People who love to tinker and build things would love this profession, as you get to be experts in multi areas and get to be involved in almost all stages of a product design.

In Malaysia, Mechatronics Engineers are needed in the areas of  Aerospace, Electronic Factories, Product Design and Equipment design (R&D divisions in companies). In fact, most factories would have a need for this field of Engineering.

Electronics Engineering

Engineering Series : Electronic Engineering

In this series of Engineering Professions, today I would like to highlight profession of an Electrical Engineer.

First off, let us distinguish between electrical and electronics engineering. It gets very confusing to tell one from the other for a high school graduate. Electronics engineering is in fact a subfield or a child of the wider electrical engineering discipline.

Electrical engineering basically deals with the generation, transmission and storage of electricity while the electronics engineering on the other hand deals with circuits and minute electrical components such as transistors, diodes, microchips etc. While electrical engineering is basically concerned with providing power to run electrical appliances, electronics engineering programs the operation and effective working of these electrical equipment and appliances.

So that brings us to the question as to how to determine if electronics engineering harmonizes and resonates well with your interests? If you are regarded by your family members and peers as being the “go to” person when it comes to repairing faulty and inoperative electrical equipment and  have always had a fascination with the working and operation of computers and other electrical equipment, then you should seriously look into adopting electronics engineering as your career.

Electrical engineering has several sub-disciplines and you can either specialize and focus on a single sub-discipline or make a combination out of these sub disciplines if more than one of these tickles your fancy. Some of these sub-disciplines are Power engineering, Control engineering, Electronics, Micro electronics, Signal processing and Computer engineering.

As an electronics engineer, you’ll have a diverse range of options of industries to select from including Aerospace, broadcast, control and instrumentation and networking industry just to name a few.

In Malaysia, Electronic Engineers are quite heavily in demand in electronic companies such as Intel, HP, Motorala (Freescale), Western Digital etc, especially where they have an R&D Division in Malaysia.  Some Malaysian companies hiring would companies like Silterra  which is into wafer fabrication. Most factories and Electrical equipment suppliers would need electronic engineers too.

Civil Engineering - Cad Design Centre, Malaysia

Engineering Series : Electrical Engineering

In this series of Engineering Professions, today I would like to highlight profession of an Electrical Engineer.

Electrical engineering generally deals with the detailed study into the application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. It is an extremely broad discipline that is further subdivided into a wide range of subfields including electronics, digital computers, control systems etc. Electrical engineering is one of the most sought after professions in the industry with almost every aspect of modern life depending on electrical engineers including aerospace industry, automotive industry, computing, communications and manufacturing. Electrical engineers need to be equipped with a diverse range of skills ranging from basic circuit theory to management skills to effectively tackle different problems and create innovative solutions.

Electrical engineering (under the subsection Power Generation) concerns the generation of electricity through various means like Hydel (Hydroelectrical), Thermal, Tidal, Solar to name just a few. Electrical engineering encompasses every facet of electricity starting from its generation down to its transmission and distribution to commercial and residential consumers.

In the Construction Industry, the area you would work in with this degree would be the Mechanical and Electrical area aka (M&E Engineering). You’ll be responsible for all the electrical design and layout of electrical wiring, and equipment in a building.

In Factories, you’ll be in charge of power supply, maintainance of electronic machines and equipment and also of the building.

To thrive and excel in this field you must have a profound understanding and knowledge of the principles of Maths, Physics, electronics, electromagnetism.

With an electrical degree in your hand, you are looking at a bright future ahead of you with the demand and use of electricity and electrical appliances increasing by day.

What does an architect do?

An architect is a person who plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design and construction of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use.

Architects design the spaces in which we live, work, and play. Though not a “classical” STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) field, the field of architecture encompasses all aspects of STEM –science, technology, engineering and math, with a nice dose of art and design thrown in. The demand for architects is on the rise, and there has never been a more exciting time to enter the field.

In Malaysia, architects normally work in big architectural firms and some of them eventually end up opening up their own firm. So.. what is Engineering?

Frequently, I have been approached by parents and students asking me what exactly is Engineering all about.. Sometimes they have some notions of what it is about, but not really concretely. Here is a nice video, that depicts what Engineering is, in a fun & easy to understand manner.

This video is targeted to pique the interest of high school students to the Engineering profession, but should entertain anyone interested in engineering. It highlights the importance of Maths and Science and touches on Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Software Engineering.

It explains engineering from as small as a mobile phone, to the Burj Khalifa.

Road Cross Section : Engineering Series – Civil Engineering-Highway Engineer

As we go about on roads in our daily lives, it is very easy to take it for granted that the roads we drive on took a lot of time to be built. And the effort by many skilled people working together in multiple teams. Computer Aided Design, CAD as usual will be used at a very early stage for design and presentation to the various parties involved.  In terms of Career, and in Universities, Highway Engineering would come as a subsection of Civil Engineering.

Here is a nice picture by Merriam Webster, on what consists below the worn road surfaces we always see:

The above picture gives a cross sectional view of the different materials used in building a road, and the thickness of the various components. The picture below also shows other utility items that would normally be constructed together with the road, so that you need not dig up the road later to put them in. Examples of these are telephone and electricity cables. Telephone cables could consist of copper and also optical fiber cables. Water mains and also gas pipes are normally planned to be inserted below the surface as well. Gutters which are built along the sides of the road are very, very important components, as the drain away water from the road after rainfalls. Water besides being dangerous to road users, also causes the road to deteriorate faster.

Roads are planned and designed by a subsection of Civil Engineering which is called Highway Engineering. Road building is also normally included as part of the learning material in Civil Engineering.

Civil Engineering - Cad Design Centre, Malaysia

Engineering Series : Civil Engineering

In this series of Engineering Professions, today I would like to highlight profession of Civil Engineering. While looking for a good video to explain this, I came across this nice video, done by the American Society of Civil Engineers, titled ‘What do Civil Engineers do’.

Civil Engineering is everywhere, and it could be one of the more visible fields in Engineering. You can see the results of it everywhere from houses to office buildings, from roads to bridges, canals and drains.

According to Wikipedia “Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineering is the second-oldest engineering discipline after military engineering.”
