Technical Career Choices

The Story: Why this series of Career Guide Articles for Technical studies – part 2

The fact is this whole process would have been much better if I started to get to know about what I want much earlier in life, say 15 onwards. I would have understood the importance of the various subjects that were thought during the ages of 15 onwards, instead of just studying for it. It would make the learning process a lot more fun if you know something about the career path you are wishing to undertake later on in life. Knowing a little about your potential future paths would have given a lot of meaning to the secondary school subjects.

During discussions with many of my fellow engineering students, I gathered that many of them got into the various Engineering fields by virtue of result and not any prior knowledge of the fields. I found this to be pretty interesting.. and what a waste of talent? What if students really knew about the various fields much earlier and get pointed to the right fields much earlier in the lives, and it would save them and their parents much stress and $$$$!

So here is a series of articles with videos I chose carefully from the internet, which I felt explains the field very well and in a simple way. Well, the articles are more technical related fields at this point of time, so be patient :) Currently, it is about the various Engineering fields and Architectural fields,  I will be adding more fields in the near future.

Technical Career Choices

The Story: Why this series of Career Guide Articles for Technical studies – part 1

I have been asked quite a bit about career choices made as teens get to the age of 16 onwards, and start thinking of their future education.

Very often they start making decisions on courses based on little input they get here and there. Perhaps from a friend or a relative, or a magazine article. Sometimes parents can’t help much, as they are in a totally different profession altogether. For example mom is a banker, father is an accountant, and the son wants to get into the field of engineering, even more specifically electronics engineering. Parents cant do much, as they are not really knowledgable about these technical fields.

I am a Mechanical Engineer, by training but I too got into my field by accident. (I also believe in the Law of Attraction now, but that is a different topic altogether :) I did my STPM a long time ago, and based on my results, it was mentioned by some career guide statistics that with my results, Mechanical Engineering would be the most likely course I would get. Thank god for that, as was i didn’t really want to do medicine (which my parents wanted me to do :)

As I was applying I realised I had a liking for some form of mechanical engineering – as I liked to take a part things, and fix and build stuff when I was growing up. And I had a liking for car engines. So I thought “Hey, Mechanical Engineering would be perfect for me” and applied for the course to a few universities, and got into USM (Their engineering campus was in Tronoh). But throughout the course content, I did not get to even touch or smell a car engine! In reality, studying life was totally different, full of Maths, Maths and more Maths, and lots of physics and lots of theory. Hadn’t I done a proper soul searching of why I went into Mechanical Engineering in the first place, undertaking this course could have been quite a disaster for me.

How Architects Design small

How to Design Like an Architect

Here is a nice video by Doug Patt, explaining not about architecture, but about the design process some architects use. It involves a lot of research, thinking, and sketching to come up with different ideas.

He draws inspiration from Prof Edmund Bacon “Its in the doing that the idea comes”. That is, we must sit and work through something before we can find the best way to solve a problem. Solving a design problem is essentially taking what we know and putting it together with that particular challenge. When an architect sits down to problem solve they frequently sketch.

What does an architect do?

An architect is a person who plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design and construction of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use.

Architects design the spaces in which we live, work, and play. Though not a “classical” STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) field, the field of architecture encompasses all aspects of STEM –science, technology, engineering and math, with a nice dose of art and design thrown in. The demand for architects is on the rise, and there has never been a more exciting time to enter the field.

In Malaysia, architects normally work in big architectural firms and some of them eventually end up opening up their own firm. China 3dprints 10 houses in 24 hours

Company in China prints 10 houses in 24 hours

While we are all coping up with the recent new technology that is 3d Printing, here in Malaysia, our neighbour China has already started experimenting with 3d printed apartment houses. They recently displayed the buildings in the Su Zhou Industrial park, not too far away from Shanghai.

The building stands five-stories and encompasses an area of 1,100 square meters. The best part is the material used for 3d printing is recycled construction waste, coupled with quick forming cement. Not only that the technology brings houses to readiness fast, it is pretty environment friendly too, something that I love about this company.

The company that does this is WinSun Decoration Design Engineering Co, based out of Shanghai. It is the brainchild of Ma Yihe, who has been a pioneer in 3d printing of buildings in China.

From information given in WinSun’s website and the video, it is shown that the printer creates pieces by laying the frame and sides of the hollow walls and after that filling it in with a crisscross design, with material inserted to give fortification. The organization says that design is controlled by a CAD Program. Very similar to how our current 3d printers print small models with plastic right on our desktop, except here it much much bigger, the printer head extrudes wet cement instead of  molten plastic.

Their current modus is to 3d print the big parts in their own factory and then sent them to the site, where it is assembled. So, you don’t really get a massive big printer on site. I suppose it is a matter of time, before the technology get’s to this point, especially when you need to construct larger number of houses.

Looking forward to have a 3d printed houses done right here in Malaysia sometime soon, with our own Malaysian born talent!
